The Greatest Achievement of All Time ........"Will" be yours?

Those of us who have experienced it before will know what I am talking about. You are sitting in a room with a representative of a corporation that you are hoping to employ in. Suddenly, you get the interview question that you have prepared the answer for countless times: ..."What would you say was your greatest achievement or accomplishment ever?" As reasonable as it is to expect this question and all the more prudent to premeditate your "best" response, perhaps your best answer, whether in your opinion or those of others, is just not good enough.

Why? Well, our hearts often may tell us something that our throat will find a difficult time coughing up. Maybe the truth is simply that some of us just haven't yet discovered what our "greatest accomplishment" is. Oh wait, but keep reading, this article is not to pity those in such predicament but teach a trick or two about how to use this uncertainty to your very own advantage.

If you do not feel comfortable answering a question, often what do you do when you must answer it? Some lie, others fabricate, and even the extremely witty must bend the truth somehow. Fortunately, this article is well within the laws and governance of The Ten Commandments and, please rest assured, will not throw a hint at you to lie. Instead, it is actually utilizing the truth and making a truth that seemed to represent a mediocre personal profile or resume stand out and WOW the interviewer. Okay, maybe not WOW, but the interviewer will either note something positive about your genuine and insightful response or nothing at all.

So what do you say? First, simply answer the question directly. Point out what you believe your greatest accomplishment is, however astounding or insignificant. Next, you should always take care to relate how this accomplishment has impacted your choice of this career in which you are being interviewed at this moment. Break pause! If you are going to do any premeditation on tackling this question now having read this far, perhaps you should re-direct your energy in evaluating how your greatest accomplishment relates to your desire for this particular job. After all, you would not be trying to see if your greatest accomplishment is worthy now because you are going to answer it directly, right? Right! If you replied "right", the third and final step is to clearly note to the interviewer that even while you believe your accomplishment is the greatest ever (and oh yes! You better say that!), you could find a greater achievement still through working at [insert company's name]. Finish with a smile upon your face, evidenced of confidence and a shadow of aspiration. Of course, the most important thing to remember through all of this is to remain calm, recite the truths, brag on yourself for a bit, and act natural. For all interviews, blessed are the ones who act natural and represent who they truly are.

That may have looked like a bunch of words. However, it may help to remember what I call the Three R's. These are a simple description of the three steps to successfully answer what your greatest accomplishment is. You should:

1.) Remark

2.) Relate

3.) Revision

So in conclusion, remember that you should never directly answer an interview question and be done. Although direct answers are great first steps, you should always add breadth and depth to support your claims. Tell the truth, and pretty soon all of you will see that every one of your greatest accomplishment is indefinite. It may be as simple as living on this planet as part of the human species to running a top leadership position at the top of the world.
